PAPER DRILL BITS - BEST PRACTICES FOR SMOOTH DRILLING

SHARPNESS MATTERS

Drill breakage might occur due to blunt drill bits. Its suggested that the Drill Bits are sharpened every two hours of running, depending on type of paper being processed. If the Drills are blunt, it might result in poor output, due to excessive force placed on the drill.

CLEANING IS THE KEY

Always keep the bit free from dirt or rust. For the same, clean the drill of all chips regularly and apply lightweight machine oil to the inside and outside of the bit. Dirty and rusty drill bits do not allow the upward passage of chips. Pressure built up by drill chips may cause a blocked bit to split or break and damage. It is suggested that the drill bits should be stored in a bath of lightweight machine oil when not in use.

Lubricate Drill Bits often:

Paraffin or similar lubrication assists the passage of chips and help prevent overheating of drill bits.

Check for Drill Wobble:
  • Inspect spindles for worn-out or damage
  • Inspect chucks are able to hold the drill bit securely
  • Check the worktable is wobbly

Keeping drill bits sharp will greatly improve their lifespan and job quality.

SECRET GIVEAWAY:

To prevent drill bit from being overheated, avoid drilling too slowly. Allow the drill to easily cut through the paper. Keep in mind; you are using a drill, not a punch.
